Welcome to KIA News from HCDA

The Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA) is currently holding public hearings for the Kakaako Agora project, which represents a creative enhancement of an existing warehouse space owned by Kamehameha Schools at 441 Cooke St. The applicant, Wei Fang, proposes the construction of a 670 square foot mezzanine, to create a unique public space that can be used as a free “indoor park” for local talent and artists. A decision-making hearing is scheduled for April 2, 2014.  For more information on this, or any project that the HCDA has already approved, please visit the "Projects" section of our website, www.hcdaweb.org.

HCDA also has a “project activity” spreadsheet to share with KIA members. View the project by clicking here.

From the John A. Burns School of Medicine: The countdown has begun to the John A. Burns School of Medicine’s 50th anniversary next year! In 1965, Hawaii’s elected officials and our partners in community health understood that “growing our own doctors” was crucial for the future of our young State. We are humbled by how JABSOM and its teaching partners have, indeed, made a difference in the lives of not only our graduates--but through them--in the health of all the people of Hawaii.

Logo’s Bookstore of Hawaii was a great place for Sherry Goya, KIA Executive Director, to find Valentine cards and a book for her “Read Aloud” at a friend’s elementary school. The staff was excellent in directing Sherry to a book which had information about “Girls Day” since she will be reading to students on March 3rd. Best of all, the book was written and illustrated by two Hawaii women!

KIA General Membership Meeting

Almost a hundred KIA members and their guests filled the Honolulu Design Center’s Cupola Room on Wednesday, January 29th, to listen to three presentations that were of interest to Kakaako businesses and residents alike.

Representatives from HART made a presentation to the KIA Board and updated them about the rail through Kakaako.  Funding is 70% from the state GET surcharge and 30% federal funding for construction.  The President signed the appropriations bill which gives another $250 million to HART this year. These funds are added to $560 million already received, and goes towards a total $1.55 billion in federal grant monies, referred to as the Full Funding Grant Agreement.  The balance of $3.5 million will come from GET, which has been in place since January 1, 2007, and runs for 16 years.  HART received $43 million from last quarter’s collections which brings the total of GET collected to about $1.2 billion.

The HART Board recently approved going to a four-car instead of two-car train.  The four-car train will hold 800 people, with about 200 seats - 25% more seating capacity  Travel times will be every five minutes during peak time and ten minutes during off hours; but with the added capacity, the system can increase frequency to accommodate demand, such as during UH Football games at Aloha Stadium.  Stations won’t have to change as they are designed to 240 feet to accommodate a four-car train.

Soil testing is being conducted in the “City Center” segment from Middle Street to Kakaako as well as data recovery work.  Data recovery is part of the previously completed Archeological Inventory Survey (AIS) done for the State Supreme Court ruling.  Bone fragments were found in Chinatown.  In addition, about 10 trenches are being dug for the Supplemental AIS related to an alignment refinement proposed in area between Ward and Kamakee Streets.  For more information, please visit the project website at honolulutransit.org;  the hot line phone number is 566-2299 and you can email a question to info@honolulutransit.org.
