The Kaka’ako Improvement Association (KIA) was formed in 1987 as a group of businesses and property owners in the Kaka’ako area for the purpose to inform, support and legislate on behalf of its members. The Kaka’ako area has been and continues to under go both structural and cultural changes that could affect individuals, organizations and companies.
Everyone living or working in Kaka’ako will find the benefits of joining KIA of great value:
- The monthly newsletter to keep KIA members abreast of the current and upcoming events, issues or decisions affecting the Kaka’ako area, are vitally important to everyone as Kaka’ako evolves. From February 2011, newsletters have been emailed to all KIA members. All issues from 2010, and to date, are on the KIA full website.
- From 2011 to 2015, the KIA membership directory was in printed form, supported by KIA members who paid for advertising. Since then, KIA members can be found on this website and is updated with new members on a regular basis.
- General Membership events (at no additional charge) occur twice a year to meet, network and be kept updated on the happenings around Kaka’ako from those in the know. The KIA General Membership Meeting affords members a time to interact with each other, listen and ask questions of guest speakers, and receive timely updates. Two KIA Networking Events are also held each year, with KIA members bringing a “brown bag” to meet and interact with each other.
- KIA’s Invitational Golf Tournament’s contribution benefits area schools and non-profit organizations. Since 2007, however, not every year, the KIA Invitational Golf Tournament has raised $78,000 and benefited the Children's Discovery Center, Polynesian Voyaging Society, KCAA Muriel Preschool, and the Voyager Charter School.
- KIA acts as the voice of its members to the Legislature, State and City administration and the Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA).
